ABOUT US

OUR PHILOSOPHY

I’m Jan Bowen Studio Director of Alderley Pilates which I created with my husband Peter in 2002.

Our aim was to create a discrete, calm and peaceful space for our clients to practice the Pilates Method.

We regard each client as an individual and aim to help each individually, whether in class or in a private lesson, to achieve their fitness and health aims.

We offer small group classes , with a maximum of 12 clients per class, and classes are graded at 5 levels from Level I Beginner to Level 5 Advanced. So  you can work at the level thats right for you and progress through the levels as you wish.

We also offer private lessons ( for 1 to 4 clients ) and these can be bespoke to your specific aims and can be Pilates matwork or incorporating Pilates machines , mainly Pilates Reformers.

We have a diverse set of clients and teach clients from mid-teens to 80s.

In simple terms the benefits of Pilates are that it helps to lengthen tight muscles, mobilise stiff joints, builds core strength from deep abdominal muscles and improves body tone and posture.

Pilates is absorbing and relaxing (definitely some “Me Time “). It can also help improve sporting performance, (Ive worked with elite athletes from football, rugby and track and field) help with recovery from illness or injury, or as part of a rehabilitation programme after surgery or joint replacement. We are always happy to work in conjunction with consultants or therapists.

GETTING STARTED

Starting Pilates doesn’t presume any specific level of fitness. However, for classes in particular should be able to get on and off a mat on the floor unassisted.

If you are new to Pilates then it’s a good idea to book a private lesson as an assessment and to ensure you join an appropriate class, probably Level 1 Beginners of Level 2 Improvers. In the first instance.

If you have done Pilates before please contact us so that we can discuss a suitable class level. We teach Body Control Pilates and we regard BCP teacher training as the Gold Standard for pilates teacher training. Our studio is used for BCP post qualification teacher training. So we focus on quite precise and flowing movement.

Our
Team

Peter

Founder and Studio Owner

Peter was first bitten by the Pilates bug in the mid nineties. Astounded by what it could do for both his body and mind Peter shifted his focus from a
career in (and lifelong passion for) transport and trained as a Pilates teacher with Body Control Pilates in 1999. Peter started teaching in 2001 and
so Alderley Pilates was born. Together with wife Jan he founded the studio in 2002

I started teaching in 2001, and that’s when Alderley Pilates was born. I founded the studio together with my wife Jan in 2002.

Today, I teach Master Matwork and the Reformer, run several private lessons and a dedicated Back class. I’m also a Supervising Teacher for Matwork, and
work with teachers preparing for their Reformer course. I’m also responsible for our finance, business development and marketing.

I’m a Council member for the Body Control Pilates Association (BCPA), a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), and an accredited Nordic
Walking instructor.

Peter says: “The best thing about Alderley Pilates is the clients – and the stunning sunsets we can see out of the studio windows.”

Jan Bowen

Founder and Studio Owner

I have always been interested in health and wellbeing. When I started to experience problems with my back, neck and shoulders, I explored how to manage
these issues. Subsequent neck surgery led to me practicing Pilates.

This was a revelation. It helped me understand the reason for my spine problems as well as how to manage my body through exercise.

I first trained with Body Control Pilates in 2000, and have undergone continual development since then. For example, I’m qualified in Master Matwork and
the Reformer.

I do most of our private lessons, around a quarter of the classes, and look after bookings and teachers.

I’m a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), and a Supervising Teacher for Matwork and Reformer Work, which means I work with student
teachers before they qualify.

I have significant experience in teaching Pilates to improve sporting performance, and have worked with elite athletes from sports including football,
horse-riding and eventing, rugby and running. I have also worked extensively with people recovering from surgery, including shoulder surgery and hip
and knee replacements.

Peter and I founded Alderley Pilates in 2002.

I work with the local Macmillan Cancer Care unit, by giving presentations on the course they run for breast cancer survivors.

Clients say: “Jan is renowned for being an empathetic and expert teacher who pushes her clients to become their very best.”

Julie

Pilates Instructor

I suffered years of back pain as a result of a structural scoliosis, and felt the benefit of Pilates as soon as I started going to classes.

I love the series of five Powerhouse exercises, as they challenge strength and stamina and incorporate all the Pilates principles. They are the key
exercises that helped build my abdominal strength and stabilise my spine.

After being an auditor in retail operations for more than 20 years, I made a total career change and qualified as a Body Control Pilates teacher. It
was a natural progression as my interest in Pilates grew.

I am now qualified to teach Intermediate Matwork, antenatal Pilates, postnatal Pilates, and Pilates for bone health (osteoporosis). I plan to complete
my level 4 qualification in 2016, equivalent to achieving a foundation degree in Pilates.

In my spare time – if I have any – I go walking, work out at the gym, watch motorsport, and read (usually about the potential of the human body).

Julie says: “The great thing about Pilates is that there is always something new to learn and challenge you – never stand still!”
